Delhi District Court Recruitment 2024 (eCourts.gov.in) New Notification

The district structure of Delhi underwent significant changes, evolving from a single district to 11 revenue districts. Initially established in January 1997 with nine districts, the city saw further expansion in September 2012 with the addition of South East and Shahdara districts. This expansion led to all 11 district commissioners assuming the role of district magistrates, a departure from the previous arrangement where only one district magistrate oversaw the entire city.

Delhi District Court

The history of Delhi’s District Court traces back to Proclamation Notification No.911 issued on 17 September 1912, which formally recognized Delhi as a distinct legal entity. This proclamation placed Delhi under the direct authority of the Governor-General of India in Council, with Mr. William Malcolm Hailey, C.I.E., I.C.S., serving as the first Chief Commissioner. Concurrently, the enactment of the Delhi Laws Act, of 1912, facilitated the enforcement of existing laws within the territory.

The expansion of Delhi’s territorial jurisdiction occurred on 22 February 1915, with the inclusion of areas across the Yamuna River, known as Trans Yamuna. This historical development laid the foundation for the city’s legal infrastructure, shaping its administrative landscape for decades to come.
